The only thing I did different was to add a bay leaf while the beans were boiling. And next time, I'll probably let the beans cook a full 2 hrs so they're more tender. I look forward to trying more recipes.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5374759176620153903.post-55872936069794320502009-10-19T09:30:05.148-07:002009-10-19T09:30:05.148-07:00Wow - that looks good! I don't like the AMerican "Pork and Beans" it's... weird to me, they are so sweet yet meant to be eaten as a savory? Idk I just prefer our Potajes, but I'll learn some day if you please I guess :)but something about adding so much high fructose corn syrup laden ketchup and brown sugar or even copious amounts of BBQ sauce... seems wrong to me... but for you I can learn love :D

P.S.
You may be able to make the best empanadas as in shape them and everything... but it's me who knows how to make the dough and work the dough and make the filling hehe...Nathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01705907653188301814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5374759176620153903.post-17576017437324176382009-10-10T12:38:54.282-07:002009-10-10T12:38:54.282-07:00Very delicious. The ham adds a silky sweetness to it and the lard and rest of the ingredients add a savoriness to it. Very well done.

Two things I would've done was add pimienton to it as well as remove them stems off the aji Cachuchas.

It slightly reminds me of my other favorite bean dish, pork and beans. Maybe you should have some little squares of bacon floating in there too?

Love,
tu novio,
Travis

p.s. You can't top my empanada making skills :PUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01105539944442221557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5374759176620153903.post-11679603817335694762009-10-09T17:49:21.872-07:002009-10-09T17:49:21.872-07:00Marilyn,

Love the idea of "corn on the cob" I also saw a recipe somewhere online for red beans that used "Pimienta Gorda" and added "Platanos Pintones" to the red beans. And yes sorry I forgot to mention that olive oil is okay for drizzling on it, but for cooking you and me know that the manteca gives it a oomph :D I keep telling you Mamey you need a cooking blog, I could probably learn so many new Cuban techniques and variations :)Nathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01705907653188301814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5374759176620153903.post-10605622243121289052009-10-08T11:01:43.375-07:002009-10-08T11:01:43.375-07:00Hey Nathan: Although the rice cooked together wit...Hey Nathan: Although the rice cooked together with red beans (congri) is more typical of eastern Cuba, the potaje (pottage or stew) version is quite popular throughout all of Cuba. In some cases small sections of corn on the cob is added to the stew. Even if you use a lot of porky products in the red beans, you can always drizzle some good olive oil when serving, of course. Unlike Brazil the Yucatan, and other places, our black beans are usually vegetarian, but sometimes a ham bone is used, just for kicks!Mameynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5374759176620153903.post-65173695261250499372009-10-08T08:22:20.734-07:002009-10-08T08:22:20.734-07:00HOla Nathan :D.
